Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a Russian policeman sent after a Georgian drug dealer who has escaped to the United States and is awaiting extradition in Chicago. Jim Belushi plays his temporary partner on the Chicago police. When the drug dealer escapes, the two police must overcome their differences in order to recapture him.
There has been too many cop films, but I can explain why this one dies. Not a bad film, but it's a copy of Lethal Weapon formula; of two different types of police partners. It's a did that, done it before type of film. With no surprises, and the typical big ending. It's well directed, and acted, but the story kills this one.
As soonArnie's butt makes an appearance, this standard buddy-cop flic takes off. I say standard, but I mean it lovingly here; the beats of the 80's actioners are hit with an unerring regularity that satiates this little ol' 80's heart o mine. Everything is solid in the solid hands of Walter "Solid" Hill. It'ssharpArnie's do,chiseledArnie's chin andtightArnie's butt.<br/><br/>But…the great Jim Belushi experiment breaks down the stone foundations and it's then, and only then, that the cracks start to appear. Don't get me wrong, Jim's not that bad, it's just a kinda dull character played with only momentary sparks of enthusiasm.<br/><br/>4 solid stars, 1 giant Austrian and 2 perfect butt cheeks.
Schwarzenegger, who when he dons a green suit is dubbed 'Gumby' by Belushi, is right on target with his characterization of the iron-willed soldier, and Belushi proves a quicksilver foil.
The police mentioned he would have a "nice" room in a upper class hotel. Ivan being a soviet would much rather live in a room similar to his home accommodations. It also helps to prevent being poisoned by western influences of capitalism.<br/><br/>Notice how poorly he responds to the pay per view TV.<br/><br/>There's more to it than that, however. Victor was arrested close to the hotel.<br/><br/>Victor had been pulled over for running a red light, whereupon the arresting officers found out that he was driving without a license and illegally possessed a handgun.<br/><br/>In addition to being arrested close to the hotel, Victor had also been lodging there before his arrest. Ivan checks into the same room that Victor was using, presumably to find any additional evidence and clues that could be used against his fugitive. Red Heat isn't always shown in its uncensored version on US TV. That is mainly due to the nudity and profanity the movie contains.
