a5c7b9f00b Best friends, Marie and Alexia, are driving out to a peaceful rural weekend to visit Alexia's parents in their secluded cottage, unbeknownst to them that a deranged and utterly sadistic killer is prowling the area, hacking and slashing for his perverse pleasure. As a result, in the dead of night, a brutal massacre will follow where none shall be spared except for the helpless Alexia who will end up as the madman's hostage. Inevitably, with Marie as the sole survivor, a sinister cat-and-mouse game will soon begin, as the young woman will do anything in her power to save her friend. But is this the end of the nightmare?
Alexia travels with her friend Marie to spend a couple of days with her family in their farm in the country. They arrive late and they are welcomed by Alexia's father. Late in the night, a sadistic and sick killer breaks into the farmhouse, slaughters Alexia's family–including their dog–and kidnaps Alexia. Marie hides from the criminal and tries to help the hysterical and frightened Alexia, chase the maniac, and disclose his identity in the end.
Contrary to what many people think, cinema was not originally American. It started in France in the 1890's. For the first half of the twentieth century French cinema was always considered glamorous, aesthetic and prestigious. If you wanna make the perfect paradox, compare that to High Tension. Being un-pretentious was one of the motives that drove the French New Wave in the late 1950's early 1960's with directors like Goddard and Truffaut. The French New Wave was inventive, High Tension is everything but.

After talking about horror for a couple of minutes, the clerk at my local store recommended this to me. It was a mistake to listen to him. High Tension is nothing more than a rip-off of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, and The Hills Have Eyes. There is no talent going into this picture whatsoever. The acting is bad, the directing is amateurish, and the writing is almost non existent (They pretty much just merged Hooper's and Craven's scripts into one, and took out bits here and there.) Even the music is pathetic. All we hear is a couple of keyboard licks repeated over and over again. John Carpenter often scores his movies like this, but at least he actually makes music using coherent scales and tones. This is just a rubbish remix.

On top of all this, High Tension is not scary. It is extremely dull and pointless, and should definitely be skipped. It is an insult to Horror and to film.
A great horror film doesn't need to be intellectually stimulating. Those few that do succeed on that level are few and far between. When there is social commentary, as in Dawn of the Dead, it's usually thinly veiled and a bit amusing, but ultimately weak compared with the themes tackled in other genres. We go to a horror film for one reason: to get kicked in the gut…repeatedly.

That being said, when High Tension works, it works to great affect. It's the most viscerally brutal film I've seen in quite some time, After a plodding exposition, it jolts the viewer into a juggernaut of terror, where almost every scene is so full of (ahem) tension. It's almost unbearable. The gore is shockingly realistic and masochistic. The frames are so full of grime, sweat, blood and tears that you feel as if you need some handy wipes just to get through the film. I went away disturbed and feeling dirty. Isn't' that what you want from a horror flick…

Now for the weaknesses…I won't bring up the ending, as I feel that any inkling of where it's going will completely ruin the experience of High Tension…A criticism I will level is the decision of the filmmakers to add a convoluted plot device to explain away why some sections are dubbed and some not. In the original film, it's two college girls going to visit the one's family in the French countryside. Both are French in the original. In the American release, through the power of overdub, they've changed one of the girls and her family to Americans. All of these characters speak English to each other. The "locals" speak French, magically changing the plot without reshooting a single frame. Get it? I didn't. They should have left it completely subtitled as the dubbing simply distracts from the acting and the (ahem) tension.

However, once the action gets going, it's almost exclusively subtitled and the middle act of the movie is a near flawless slasher flick on the level of Chainsaw Massacre. It's the first and third acts that bring the movie down, but that's not enough to cancel out the terrifying and disturbing impact of the film.
Though staged with technical skill and unflinching brutality, it's an awfully familiar-looking slaughter filled with moments on loan from other movies.
"Sara 'Perche' Ti Amo" by Ricchi & Poveri. "Runaway Girl" by U. Roy. "New Born" by Muse. "Superstar" by Sonic Youth, which is a cover of "Superstar" by The Carpenters. You can view the film in three ways:

(1) U.S. English Language Dubbed Version - everything is dubbed in English.

(2) U.S. Unrated Version - half of the film is subtitled, and half of the film is dubbed (which is how it was released in theaters).

(3) Original French Language Director's Cut Version - everything is in French.

The film itself is the same no matter which version you choose. The only problem with choosing the Original French Language Director's Cut Version is that the subtitles are not entirely accurate. There were lines added in the U.S. English Dubbed Version, so if you choose to view the film in French, the English subtitles will sometimes display lines that are not being said by anyone. For the US theatrical release, the film was rated R by the MPAA. To achieve this, the film had to be cut heavily. More than one minute of violence is missing in different scenes.

The Korean DVD is censored as well. Nearly 1 minute is missing in this version. Yes–it's loosely based on the novel Intensity by Dean Koontz. A soundtrack album featuring François-Eudes Chanfrault's electronic score was supposed to be released by Thrive Records in the United States, but it was ultimately canceled. On the composer's official Web site (http://personal.computer.free.fr/web/) a link is available to stream "Faustina Mauricio Mercedes Part IV." If you dig deeply enough through the coding, however, about 30 minutes of audio from the score can be downloaded. The 2005 US DVD of High Tension had to be retouched before its release. However, the content that had to be removed from the movie was not of a violent nature, as one might suspect. Instead, the Jack Daniel's logo was removed every time it could be seen. Unfortunately, we do not know why this happened and whether it was someone from Lionsgate or someone from Jack Daniel's who stepped in.
